TweetMAKES YOU THINK HUH?
TweetI got this in an email and although you can take any piece of Scripture and assign whatever meaning you want to it (hence the fundamentalists) but I still thought it was interesting concerning the Jews and Christians for that matter and the fundamentalist Muslims. What do you think about it?
Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning. I have told you this so that you may not fall away. They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God. They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me. I have told you this so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you."
Tweet[QUOTE=kite]"And you also Testify, because you have been with me from the beginning."QUOTE]
I told you all not to mess with me. I got friends.
Seriously though, it does send a chill, that part about everyone killing in the name of their god. Its crazy to read that.
TweetI think this passage conveys the intolerance of man at the time of the author. They killed each other because of beliefs, just as the muslims do today. There were many different competing deities at the time the Gospel of John was written. If you remember Julius Caesar was a "deity", so there were many gods in competition to the christians god already. I don't think it is a stretch for the author to state, christians will be killed by those who claim to worship god.Originally Posted by kite
